In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
